In contrast, the present study is concerned with how lives look when things turn out well, offering perhaps a model portrait of dramas that are productive, positive, and meaningful.  In this way, the following portrait is offered as a complement to the rich work that has preceded it.  The aim of this chapter is to describe major aspects of the way a lifedefining desire comes into being, based upon the autobiographies of several persons who have achieved a vocation in life.  Whatever the source, singularly or in combination, persons experience a wide range of primitive dramas, any one of which could probably develop into a plot for life.

When personhood is achieved, positioning reaches a culmination point and one moves to positing.  There is no definite end to an investigation of the personal significance of positing, but one can strive for a general understanding.  The same term that characterizes a regnant position defines the ideal story line of a career.  Joy, for instance, does not mark a gap.  One now posits from a certain fullness within.  These expectations can be spelled out as indicated in Table 1.  This pattern is given to the birth of desire.

However, there are schemes such as Aristotle's types and Burke's (1969) dramatic pentad (scene, act, agent, agency, and purpose) that guide an assessment.  We can use Aristotle, Burke, or others to assess the intelligibility of stories and to clarify the synthesis of explanations within them.  If an element facilitated or hindered greatly, it would be of great significance.  Role opposition is fundamental to the movement of a story.  First, the law of the excluded middle would exclude the middle of the story in which mixing or proportion is most prominent.
