Given this history of race relations and racism, African Americans are constantly bearing the burden of reacting to (acceptance or rejection) white standards, white comparisons, and white evaluations. The tide of Guthrie's book, Even the Rat Was White (1976), is indicative of the pervasiveness of "whiteness" in the lives of black people. Researchers have neglected to study and report the positive story of African American men actively seeking not only monetary but also parental responsibility for their children.

He states that it is hard to be an African American man in American society because of the terrible situation in which most African American men find themselves.
