We enjoyed recalling some of our expeditions and humorous events associated with our travels stimulated by the trinkets we had brought back with us. We remembered people from our past captured in pho­ tographs and pondered where life had taken them now. We sensitively recalled the last days with my mum looking at her personal belongings preserved care­ fully and handled respectfully. That opportunity to use story allowed me to con­ nect with my emotional self and with the person sharing that moment with me, to express how I felt through a story, from my perspective, filling in the narrative with my own thoughts and feelings.

What was it about Gobbolino, the witch’s cat (Moray Williams 1942) who journeys from place to place becoming a kitchen cat, a ship cat, a show cat among her many guises in pursuit of a place to belong that I identi­ fied with as a child? Already, my emphasis upon Gobbolino’s journey and search for a home reflects my somewhat nomadic childhood and desire to settle, along­ side the common need in most of us to be accepted. With adult perspective and insight I can make this connection because it is part of my story.
