She gave up the job she loved, because her family had to move to another part of the country. She found a new employment but she misses her previous work and work setting. One day, to her great pleasure, she discovers that there is a vacancy in a firm similar to the one she left. She applies for the job and is accepted. She is overjoyed, and describes her experience as: “It feels like coming home”. The job resembles the one she had before, and the head of the department, a nice man, showed her around and explained to her everything she needed to know in order to start.

I will write about the way in which psychoanalysis could be used more extensively and effectively to the benefit of groups and organisations, and how its way of looking at certain phenomena could become more accessible and beneficial to non-analytic consultants and managers in the context of their day-to-day work. In order to do this, I will tackle five main subjects in the next chapters. First, I will evoke our original, primary, basic form of mental functioning. Secondly, I will describe and illustrate some of the ways in which the primary form of mental functioning ‘talks’ to us after it has disappeared from consciousness, and I will describe some of the ways in which we become emotionally involved in the work we do.
