On balance it was a testimony to the diversity and innovation marbled throughout American higher education, yet provided neither a model nor sufficiently large critical mass of alumni that would make its presence obviously consequential beyond its limited charge and special mission. One peculiarity of colleges and universities in the United States was that they invoked a tradition of and commitment to the residential campus experience—as distinguished from the urban universities of Europe. On close inspection, however, one finds that most colleges could not afford to build dormitories to accommodate most of their undergraduates.

27 If one were to travel to campuses nationwide around 1925 one would find with remarkable frequency the appearance of a new “Memorial Stadium”—large football arenas seating between 30,000 and 60,000 and named in honor of alumni and state citizens who had lost their lives serving in World War I. This was especially important at state universities because it showed that these public institutions were “coming of age” as a source of statewide cohesion marked both by increasingly regular state tax subsidies plus private donations.

The Council for Financial Aid to Education reported in 1962 more than $42 million in corporate contributions. The Council was significant for two reasons: first, it provided hundreds of colleges a connection with a collective, nationwide fund-raising medium—one in which the general aim was to persuade and remind the American public that “going to college” was central to the American Way—and needed continual support for student financial aid. Second, this latter emphasis on student scholarships helped remedy a long-time shortfall among most colleges—namely, few colleges had the resources ear marked for scholarship funds to assist academically able yet financially needy applicants.
