Der Stein der Weisen Die Geschichtswissenschaft, richtig begriffen, umfaßt demnach die gesamte menschliche Kultur und deren Entwicklung: sie ist stete Auffindung des Göttlichen im Weltlauf und darum Theologie, sie ist Erforschung der Grundkräfte der menschlichen Seele und darum Psychologie, sie ist die aufschlußreichste Darstellung der Staats- und Gesellschaftsformen und darum Politik, sie ist die mannigfaltigste Sammlung aller Kunstschöpfungen und darum Ästhetik, sie ist eine Art Stein der Weisen, ein Pantheon aller Wissenschaften.
Die homerische Dichtung ist der Niederschlag des griechischen Polytheismus, Euripides ein Abriß der griechischen Aufklärungsphilosophie, die gotische Baukunst eine vollkommene Darstellung der mittelalterlichen Theologie, Bach der Extrakt des deutschen Protestantismus, Ibsen ein Kompendium aller ethischen und sozialen Probleme des ausgehenden neunzehnten Jahrhunderts; aber manifestiert sich in Homer und Euripides in auch nur entfernt ähnlichem Maße das griechische Wirtschaftsleben, in der Gotik das mittelalterliche, in Bach und Ibsen das moderne?
