I slapped my hand on the bar. “Exactly. ” Ned raised an eyebrow. ” “See—and that’s not right. ” Ned gave me a playful poke in the arm. “You’d better not let Darci see your irritation, Slugger. ” “Okay, okay,” I muttered. ” “Smart girl,” he said with another poke. “I heard you’ve been vocal about Summerset’s latest residents,” I said with a jerk toward the pool table. Ned’s playful tone disappeared. ” With a shake of his head, he frowned. ” “’Fraid so,” he replied, and took a sip of his beer. I laid my hand on his arm.

For what? I looked over at the clock. Too late for lunch. Too early for dinner. Whatever. All I knew was I needed food. As I cracked the eggs and whipped them in the bowl, Tink’s words pecked at me. Was it my responsibility to help Darci? In the past, Abby had guided me in decisions like that. She’d pointed the way with her insight. ” Not a very helpful statement.
