QFS include inappropriate incapacitating fatigue, myalgia, nausea, headache and night sweats. There may also be disturbed sleeping patterns together with changes in mood and mental concentration. A small proportion can go on to develop chronic hepatitis, endocarditis or osteitis (bone infection). Symptoms are either continuous from the acute attack or occur as a relapse up to a year after the acute attack. QFS lasts at least two years but more usually persists for five to six years. The chance of developing the Q fatigue syndrome is much less if the acute Q fever is treated immediately with doxycycline (an antibiotic to which the causative organism is sensitive).
