By Amartya Sen

In his reviews, Bernard Williams considers the conceptual connections between Sen's services, monetary welfare, and the wider idea of ''well-being'', and asks no matter if the inspiration increases questions of justice. Ravi Kanbur considers the results of the uncertainty within the selection that would be regarded as one fascinating power. John Muellbauer deals a specification of selection, and discusses the significance, for assessing functions, of the relation among personal tastes and constraints and among personal tastes themselves. Keith Hart explores the difficulty for these societies within which financial lifestyles isn't really absolutely ''commoditized'' and within which, consequently, it doesn't continuously make feel to lessen issues to a cost. Sen concludes with replies to those reviews.

Why must we reject being vaguely right in favour of being precisely wrong? The conflict between relevance and simplicity of use, referred to earlier, is indeed a hard one in economic measurement and evaluation, but it is difficult to see why simplicity of use should have such priority over relevance. As it happens, the more diverse characterisations of living standard, with various components separately presented, can be used in many practical exercises without great difficulty. Consider, for example, the much discussed subject of the comparison of China and India in terms of the enhancement of the living standard.

Ultimately, the focus has to be on what life we lead and what we can or cannot do, can or cannot be. I have elsewhere called the various living conditions we can or cannot achieve, our 'functionings', and our ability to achieve them, our 'capabilities' (Sen 1984a: Introduction and Chapters 13-20). The main point here is that the standard of living is really a matter of functionings and capabilities, and not a matter directly of opulence, commodities or utilities. This approach goes back not only to Marx, but also to Adam Smith.

The constitutive plurality of the standard of living can be dealt with not only through formal aggregation, but also through simultaneous assessments of the different objects of value. CAPABILITY AND FUNCTIONING I have left one difficult general issue for discussion until almost the very end of this second lecture, and that is the question of the respective roles of capabilities and functionings in the assessment of living standard. A functioning is an achievement, whereas a capability is the ability to achieve.
