This chapter attempts a close reading of Zephaniah to reveal its literary artistry and provide information about its genre. As was stated in the first chapter, 'close reading' means the careful evaluation of the major aspects of a literary work. While some facets of Zephaniah are not mentioned, the points covered reflect the main elements of Zephaniah. The Structure of Zephaniah Edgar V. Roberts defines structure as 'the organization of a literary work as influenced by its plot... or main idea....

Each literary artist uses a generic medium to reveal creativity and individual style. Still, genres do exist and inform literary study, and it is legitimate to search for Zephaniah's place in classical categories. The first chapter states the need for both close reading and genre analysis in a thorough literary study, and the second chapter explains genre study.

These plays are usually styled after Greek drama, but often result 'in an eclectic and original adaptation both of the common elements of Greek tragedy and of various special features characteristic of the several dramatists' (Bush:415). For instance, Milton adapts Greek tragedy to fit the story of Samson. Still, closet dramas follow the Greek tradition by limiting action to a single event, by preserving the unities of time and space, and by using choruses and messengers (Hanford:282). Character and action are also similar to Greek drama.
