Finally, to ensure that individuals do not endeavour to outperform one another, bonuses, promotion or recognition should not depend on which employees were the most productive or effective.

Unease and uncertainty abate if employees are empowered to emphasise quality over efficiency or vice versa. Finally, tension is alleviated when workload is perceived to diminish. However, none of these practices or attributes will overcome anxiety or foster composure if individuals feel constrained, trapped or controlled. Anxiety will diminish only when managers can furnish employees with the necessary autonomy and freedom. Employees like to feel they can decide which tasks to undertake and to determine the order in which to perform these activities.
