This is a form of survival mechanism. When people find themselves micromanaging, controlling or punishing there is often a brain deficit involved. This doesn’t always mean that something is overactive; an underactive PFC causes problems too. Dopamine, you’ll soon find out, is the neurotransmitter that has many functions for the brain including reward, motivation, working memory and attention. When the brain has a lowered ability to use or to access dopamine it means that other brain areas aren’t being quietened down in order to enable the brain to focus on one thing at a time.

This is important to be aware of for a fuller understanding of the brain because there is often a balance of inputs occurring. A classic example is emotional and rational inputs into a decision-making process. When we switch from one behaviour to another, which involves the activation of the motor system, the signals from other parts of the brain are key. For example, the prefrontal cortex may convey a signal telling the basal ganglia to enable a specific action to occur. Therefore, understanding how the prefrontal cortex works, and the other brain areas, is also important to fully understand how the basal ganglia will respond.

This facilitates lots of different approach-oriented and goal-oriented behaviours. Axmacher et al (2010) looked at how we process unexpected events. It was known that we are more likely to remember unpredicted events than the predictable and routine ones. The relationship between this novelty processing and the hippocampus and NA was explored by Axmacher et al. Striatum and Nucleus Accumbens Prior to this particular study it was known that the hippocampus is involved in memory formation and the NA is involved in processing rewards and novel information.
