Mädchen wurden oft schon mit 13 Jahren verheiratet. Eine Vorschrift des Klosters Weitenau im Schwarzwald besagte zum Beispiel, dass der Probst »jeder Frau des Klosters, die 14 Jahre alt ist, bei Strafe von einem Pfund gebieten soll, einen Mann zu nehmen«. Für die Männer wurde das Heiratsalter auf 18 bis 20 Jahre festgesetzt. Dies wurde so strikt geregelt, weil die Grundherren die Zahl ihrer Untertanen vergrößern oder wenigstens halten wollten. Ehepaare bekamen durchschnittlich sechs bis acht Kinder, von denen jedes vierte schon im ersten Lebensjahr starb.
Im 14. Jahrhundert folgten die Ulmer mit dem Bau ihres Münsters. Zur gleichen Zeit wurden in Prag, Wien, Heidelberg und Köln Universitäten gegründet, in denen nicht nur der rechte Glaube, sondern auch das wissenschaftliche Denken gelehrt wurde. Das Bürgertum in den Städten forderte und erhielt erste politische Mitwirkungsrechte. Im Jahr 1396 entstand in Köln eine erste Verfassung, nach der alle Bürger ein Mitbestimmungsrecht in der Stadtpolitik besaßen. Das alles vergisst, wer vom »finsteren Mittelalter« spricht.
Den Bäuerinnen war es zum Beispiel verboten, eng anliegende, ausgeschnittene Kleider, Pelze oder teuren Schmuck zu tragen, auch wenn sie es sich leisten konnten. Diese Dinge waren adligen Damen und reichen Bürgerinnen vorbehalten.
