I Definition: Relation Eine Relation ist eine Tabelle obiger Gestalt, bestehend aus einem Kopf und einem Rumpf, mit folgenden vier Eigenschaften: 1. 2. 3. 4. Es gibt keine doppelten Tupel. Tupel sind nicht geordnet (etwa von oben nach unten). Attribute sind nicht geordnet (etwa von links nach rechts). Alle Attribute sind atomar. Eine Relation wird auch als normalisierte Relation bezeichnet. Die ersten drei Eigenschaften ergeben sich aus einer streng mathematischen Definition der Relationen: Eine Relation ist darin ganz grob nichts anderes als eine Menge von Zeilen (Tupel).

Sie existieren nicht real, erscheinen dem Benutzer aber wie „normale“ Relationen. Sichten werden aus Basisrelationen abgeleitet (siehe Abschn. 3). Abfrageergebnisse werden in Tabellenform ausgegeben und besitzen ebenfalls die Struktur einer Relation. Sie existieren jedoch nur temporär im Arbeitsspeicher während der Ausgabe auf dem Bildschirm oder dem Drucker. Temporäre Relationen existieren ähnlich den Abfrageergebnissen nur vorübergehend. In der Regel werden sie bei bestimmten Ereignissen automatisch wieder gelöscht, meist am Ende einer Datenbanksitzung.
