Move a couple of the fields right now. To the left of the field names is a little double-pointed, vertical arrow. You can change the order of the fields by positioning the cursor over the arrow and using the old click-and-drag technique. Notice the radio buttons and other options at the bottom of this window.

In the Contact Management file, there’s currently only one table. When you first create a file, the first table is automatically given the same name as the file and the Define Database window’s Fields tab is displayed. For every table you want to add to the file, you need to return to the Tables tab. No need for too much detail right now. I just want you to take a look around. Go to the upper-right corner of the window and click on the pop-up list next to View by. Since there’s only one table in this file, you really can’t tell what effect making a selection would have.

Which is the “right” way? It depends on what we think is convenient and appropriate. Sometimes, only our experience will tell us. Fortunately, FileMaker provides tools to allow separate files to communicate when they need to, as well as tools to partition and order the data into separate areas for clearer organization within a single file. With this in mind, don’t get too hung up on how many files your database should have. FileMaker files are organizational tools like a set of drawers in your desk or filing cabinet.
