This was part of the master’s house, which also had two dormitories for the boarders, one with fourteen beds, and the other with ten. There were grounds for concern about the standard of teaching as well as the condition of the school’s infrastructure. Older pupils were taught Latin but not to a high level.

In one country school, Pilling Lane in the township of Preesall, the building was made of mud, with just one room (15 feet high, 13 1/2 feet long, and 6 3/4 feet wide) that had a rough floor composed of small stones embedded in clay and three small windows. ” In the winter there were 30 to 40 pupils. 14 Bryce acknowledged that it was difficult for the trustees and masters of the schools to repair buildings, and even more so to erect new and more suitable school premises. John’s College Oxford, was one of the most influential figures in its early development through his endowment of 37 fellowships for former members of the school in the college. This established a close connection between Merchant Taylors School and the University of Oxford, a connection that was to endure for centuries.
