Some general conclusions relevant to policy, however, can be drawn. Comparison of Western countries shows that in all of them the tax and transfer system does have redistributive effects. Sweden stands at the top: its tax and transfer system reduces inequality by 50% from market income to disposable net income. The US is lowest, with a reduction of 20%. The UK and Australia have reductions of around 25%, Finland 30%, Denmark and Germany 40%. Taxes and transfers combine in various permutations to produce these consequences.
