In our earlier European travels, we had many occasions to regret the absence of a guide like the one you now have in your hands. Too many times we unknowingly passed by battlefields and arrived at museums closed for the day. There are, of course, many military histories of World War II, but these give scant assistance to someone who wants to visit the Normandy beaches or the battlefields around Bastogne.

The first-line British fighters the Spitfire and the Hurricane had demonstrated their capabilities. The Spitfire was a match for the Messerschmitt Bf 109 except at altitudes above 20,000 feet, where the fuel injection of the German fighter gave it an advantage. The Hurricane did not match the Bf 109 in performance but, when flown by an experienced pilot, could fight successfully.
