And that is why it is most appropriate to focus on the life and thinking of Einstein in writing about the development of science and our present-day worldview. The early Greek philosophers asked questions about the physical reality they observed. This is what science is all aboutasking questions. And obtaining an answer only leads to more questions. The Greeks depended on reason and observation to develop their worldview. It was much later that the scientific method, modeled on the work of Galileo, became fully developed.
This question was to lead to others, such as, What is the most basic substance of the universe? and Is the structure of nature based on mathematics, processes, or substances? The first great Pre-Socratic thinker was a Greek named Thales. E. in Miletus, lonia, which today is in Turkey. He thought that water was the primary and simplest element upon which nature is based. It's easy to see how he came up with this idea. After all, water is essential for growth in plants, and almost everything that is heated gives off moisture.
Physics begins with ideas. These ideas are based on reason and logic and, in almost all cases, follow observations of the natural world. This is called natural philosophy, which is what science was called 2,500 years ago. Instead of relying solely on observation and reason to come to a conclusion, modern science utilizes experimentation and mathematics to establish proofs of the ideas. You could say that mathematics is the language of physics. For many individuals, the mention of math sends a cold shiver down the spine.
