The tightly-knit functional distribution made possible by the affinity of the high and low varieties appears to be the key ingredient for the diachronic stability of diglossia, and hence its functional particularities. Consequently, I suggest that while the term 'diglossia' might be applied generally to a community as a whole, it still should be understood as pertaining specifically to parts of the repertoire. By designating certain languages as tertiary in the paradigm—if indeed, genetically or functionally, they are—then the concept can be kept alive and productive.

1. It is granted that there were several languages in use in different quarters and for different purposes: Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, Latin. Although this makes for a more complex overall picture of socio-multilingualism, a two-way relationship between high and low Hebrew can also be discerned. 2. g. Various evidences combine to support this, (a) A literary dialect was already in use at the same period, namely QH, and this dialect differed from MH (more on this below), (b) The Mishnah was orally composed and passed down, making the language of its later written record more likely to be the spoken variety, (c) Grammatical similarities between MH and the Bar Kokhba letters corroborate the use of this dialect for non-literary, or low, functions (Spolsky 1991: 87-91).
