However, an interesting question is how to explain the involvement of scientists when this commitment to the national community provided the qualitative jump toward imperial aggression and dominance, and eventually toward mass murder of populations, as happened in the Nazi case. Highly reputable scientists and technicians played an important role in the East General Plan of 1942–43 that sought to establish German settlements in Eastern Europe and that involved mass deportation, slave labour and murder of the Jewish population.
