3 Many users, regarding the DBMS decision as a strategic decision for the long term, feel that migration from SQL/DS to DB2, which fully exploits the hardware and operating system of large IBM processors, offers a growth path for their capacity requirements for the foreseeable future and beyond. 4 The use of SQL/DS as an end users' tool, with consequent reduction in the DP development backlog, is often cited. SQL/DS is said to be well-documented and easy to learn and use, with the minimum of support to users by DP staff.

The two aspects have been approached in different ways and appropriate models and tools have been provided for each aspect. Different levels of design have been suggested: user requirement analysis, conceptual design, logical design and physical design (BOU4). These abstract levels intend to make their methods as independent as possible, either of a special software and hardware support or, of any special domain of application. At each level, several methods and tools have been developed. Generally, these methods use one or several of the following four categories of tool: manual tools, algorithmic tools, interactive tools and intelligent tools.

An example of this might be the linking of the creator or 'owner' of a table to his row in an 'employee' table in the personnel application. The SQL/DS optimiser A vital constituent of the relational data system is the optimiser, whose function is to evaluate the alternative access strategies available for the execution of an SQL statement and to select the most efficient. For a complex query involving the joining of more than one table, several selection criteria and sorting of the result, SQL/DS may have a large number of options.
