The study concluded that the region was a net beneficiary from the acquisition process, primarily due to the resultant improvements in technology, management and access to finance. Such benefits help to generate additional income, employment and associated economies of scale in the receiving region. 40 Regional Economics The pessimistic view of the branch-plant dominated economy perceives a cumulative cycle of dependency from which the receiving regional economy would have great difficulty in escaping.
Such dependency arguably inhibits indigenous growth. The prevailing structure of output and employment also acts as a constraint upon growth, with those industries expanding at the national level such as financial services, being underrepresented in the region. This 'problem region' became more of a problem during the 1980s as it failed to benefit from the UK economy's growth in the mid-1980s. Instead growth was limited in Northern Ireland during these years, and unemployment increased.
