This ended the political independence of the northern kingdom, and brought refugees from there to Jerusalem. Among the latter were groups possessing written or oral traditions such as those about Elijah and the religious practices of associated prophetic groups, annalistic* records of kings of Israel and traditions about the beginnings of the monarchy under Saul. From now on, Judah and Jerusalem took over the role of ‘all Israel’, thus providing the impetus for collecting past traditions and for fashioning them into a comprehensive story about Israel’s origins.

Chapter 2 HOW BIBLICAL WRITERS WROTE The first Chapter has indicated that there is no such thing as the Bible, if by the Bible is meant a collection of material whose content is identical for each and every copy.
