Staying away from home the night before a game is one of the most boring times of a footballer’s life. 30, then off to bed. This was exactly how it was on that Friday night in Bury St Edmunds. Normally there would be a cards or dominoes school in somebody’s room for an hour or two but for some unknown reason nobody had arranged anything. 45pm. Dave MacLaren had his head buried in a golf magazine so there was no chance of any conversation from him. I wandered down the corridor to the room that Ernie Hunt and Dave Woodfield were sharing.
It certainly was a wonderful career, but as you will discover it was a very bumpy ride at times. As with any job there were many ups and downs, but as a footballer you could have more than 30,000 people watching you when you were on a downer.
