The belief now becomes prevalent that the soul or spirit of man will survive death. When Psalm 16:10 expresses the conviction that God will not give up the soul of the Psalmist to the underworld, that is, will not let him die but have him recover, the Greek translators most likely understand this to mean'Thou THE HOLY SPIR17 wilt not leave my soul in Hades," thus presupposing that after the death of the body the soul enters another world where God keeps it in safety. " (Eccles. 3:21), and claims that no one knows "how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child (11:5).
Joel 2:28-32 describes the corning day of judgment which clearly brings this world and its order to an end. " Then God will pour his Spirit upon all, and whoever calls upon his name will be saved, for upon Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be salvation. Still more plainly Isaiah 4:4 tells us: A spirit of judgment will come upon Jerusalem. Like an overflowing stream it will wash away all the filth and all the guilt, leaving behind a cleansed and holy people to live in peace and prosperity. THE SPIRIT AS THE CREATOR OF A NEW HUMANITY By now it is clear that the new world which the Spirit will create is dependent on the transformation of man.
In other words, it was to the founder of this sect that the meaning of the prophecies was revealed. Josephus tells us that in this group there was a regular school of prophets (Ant. 13. ). He also speaks of a group of prophets at the court of Herod (Ant. owers. One of these is said to have cried out for seven years and five months, "Woe unto Jerusalem'' (Ant. 20. ; War 6. ; 7. ). Three prophets are mentioned in the canonical Book of Acts (536-37; 21:28). It is apparently not so simple to channel the Holy Spirit and confine him to officially approved reservations.
