Miller and Almon (2009: 8) Children can learn formal, academic skills through play when a skilled adult is there to support and scaffold children’s learning, as evidence from the boys’ writing projects shows. Play supports both short-term and long-term mastery by allowing children to learn about writing in contexts that make sense to them in the short term, and to learn to write by applying and practising taught skills, embedding the learning. The academic skills that children learn through play become the foundation for learning future skills, and foster learning dispositions that enhance children’s learning through to their adult life.

Writing in role play Role play areas help children to move into the ‘literacy club’ by creating spaces where they can use language in play contexts that link to the real world and where they can engage in symbolic play as a precursor to writing. As they begin to understand that writing is a way of recording language in a symbolic form, they can mark make and write in contexts that have intrinsic meaning for them. At the same time, role play supports social development and collaborative play. During the project, role play themes were developed by practitioners based on observations of children’s interests and preoccupations as well as in discussion with children.

Over time, children began to make marks on paper with more confidence. Conclusion: Impact of changes to the learning environment All the children enjoy discovering the resources in hidden areas of the garden (where they like to play). The children have enjoyed telling staff about their play. The boys’ writing projects showed that small but carefully considered changes to the environment can have an immediate impact, increasing the amount of children’s spontaneous mark making and writing. This was sometimes challenging, as one project practitioner describes: ‘It’s hard because everything is moving and all over the place, but it’s great that the children are moving around with their clipboards.
