22 In both contexts, what has been lacking has been general theories of development rather than theories restricted (often, as a matter of principle) to particular cultures. Cognitive developmental psychology does now purport to offer such general theories. In so far as they propose generally applicable patterns for the development of language and thought, they may be viewed as a form of diachronic semiotics, helping us to understand how our capacities for sense construction develop. It is the choice of a cognitive base for the evolutionary progression that represents the distinctive contribution of the cognitive developmentalist.
