The MNC (multinational corporation) approach that has been the focus of Singapore’s development should no longer be the driver of the economy as it will probably not be feasible for much longer.
Textile companies were forced to relocate in lower-cost countries and Singapore lost out on potential dividends from a viable industry. The approach had led Singapore to lose many of its core competencies each time it started afresh with a new industry. The result was the dislocation of relevant infrastructure, skills workers had gained and the knowledge required of each industry. If Singapore had focused on productivity and innovation, it could have stretched capabilities and allowed lower value-added industries, like textiles, to be viable by being highly automated.
