44 Autonomous Learners I intended this enquiry to provide insights into learners’ strategy use from their own perspectives, reducing the problem articulated by Wenden (1986: 186) that data collection and analysis in many learner strategy studies are focused too much on strategies themselves and too little on learners’ insights into other dimensions of their language learning experience. Since I wanted not only to identify changes in strategy use but also to discover possible explanations for any changes, retrospective interview indicated itself as a logical choice of research method for this study.
One of the consequences of this experience, however, was a temporary sense that she was losing the control over her learning that she had so recently gained: While many people acknowledged my high level of proficiency, I was secretly thinking that I was far from my goal and experienced the fear that I might not be able to reach my life’s goal because I had not learned the target language in the target culture. It is significant, then, that this is the first time Hye-Yeon mentions the possibility of learning English overseas.
These stories are personal accounts of how individuals have achieved personal goals. For Hye-Yeon, it was the goal of communication. For me, it was the goal of intellectual privacy. Both of these goals were responses to the constraints of our own cultural backgrounds. We may say these stories are parallel in the sense that the actualization of these goals was achieved by utilizing language as a tool.
