Much, much better than I am. (Mrs Colclough) Generally, then, women were quick to praise their daughters-in-law, particularly their success in delegating some of the household tasks to their husbands. Conversely, others, accustomed to more traditional gender roles, were concerned that their son’s contribution to routine chores was excessive. The older woman may be worried about cooking and serving the meal to a comparative stranger, whilst the prospective daughter-in-law may experience similar anxieties about consuming food with people she has only just met. Formal meals, then, can be something of an ordeal and for some women associated with a feeling of being tested or auditioned throughout.
