It denotes, first, in a commonsense way, the act of dismantling the administrative, monetary, fiscal, and physical barriers to movement and exchange erected by the frontier. European Union has, by this understanding, been about deconstructing those barriers. But the deconstruction of the frontier as economic and political institution has left intact the myth of the frontier as separator of peoples. The deconstructive project has stopped half-way. The task that remains is a cultural, discursive, even literary project the realization of which requires the “tools” of cultural, discursive, literary deconstruction, such as the apprehension of the coups de force that are responsible for the language in which the project is discussed.
