Place it in a center with a tape recorder so that students can listen and sing along. Bodily-Kinesthetic Center: Write 20 state names on a beach ball. The group stands in a circle and tosses the ball to one another. The student who catches the ball reads the name of the state closest to his right thumb and names the capital.

Older students can keep a Special Word Dictionary where they write these words. Paper-Plate Spelling: Write one letter on each of a number of paper plates and give each student several plates. Have students stand if they have a letter that appears in a word you say. If several students stand up at the same time, acknowledge all of them as you reinforce how the word is spelled.
