Dickens was a master of characterization, but readers forget that setting in Dickens plays a large role, too. Nineteenth-century writer and critic George Gissing demonstrates Dickens’s influence best when he writes about his own perceptions of London: London of that time differed a good deal from the London of today; it was still more unlike the town in which Dickens lived when writing his earlier books; but the localities which he made familiar to his readers were, on the whole, those which had undergone least change.
